The residents' association was made aware of the concerns from local residents about the speed of traffic on Llanelian Road and Dolwen Road in Old Colwyn. In particular traffic leaving the national speed limit at Bryn Rhodyn failing to slow down sufficiently to the restricted limit along Dolwen Road. Traffic coming from Old Colwyn was failing to slow sufficiently after Cwm Teg towards the blind summit outside the cemetary leading to near misses. There are many homes and numerous junctions along this stretch of road with a hazardous stretch between the junctions of Llanelian Road and Dolwen Road and Dolwen Road and Willowbrook where the road narrows to a point where large vehicles are unable to pass safely without a good deal of caution.
A suggestion to install traffic calming measures in the form of speed cameras or vehicle activated signs was put forward by councillor the late Bob Barton, sadly Bob had to stand down through ill health before any progress could be made. Having unsuccessfully approached the county council to get vehicle speed activated road signs installed the present ward councillors Gail Jones and Neil Coverley approached the Bay of Colwyn Town Council to see if they could assist. Following several months of debate the town council voted in May 2023 to fund two vehicle activated road signs to warn approaching vehicles of their speed.
In November 2023 the first of these signs has been installed and is working on Llanelian Road and the second is being installed at Dolwen Road. A good example of what the residents' association can achieve working together with our local councillors.
